As much as I love Christmas in July, I was a bit curious about how this even got started. I had my suspicions, such as Hallmark or Macy's, as a marketing gimmick but it turns out that I was wayyyy off base.
Christmas in July was started in 1933 at a girl's camp called Keystone Camp in Brevard, North Carolina, according to Southern Living magazine's website. It seems that the camp's co-founder, Fannie Holt, had the idea and she went all out with fake snow, a Christmas tree, carolers, Santa Claus, and presents. She even used laundry bags as stockings!
The coolest thing is, that the camp has continued the tradition all these years. These days it's more of a Christmas movie marathon and a dip in the lake, but they still celebrate and that's awesome enough for me.
